New OEPA Bulletin Release!

September 6, 2011

The Office of Environmental Protection Authority has released Environmental Protection Bulletin No. 15 – Hydraulic fracturing of gas reserves.

This latest bulletin has been developed in response to the rapidly growing interest in developing unconventional gas reserves in Western Australia, and seeks to provide environmental protection through managing processes such as hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.

The OEPA has highlighted potential risks requiring management, which include;

  • water use;
  • storage and disposal of produced water;
  • potential chemical contamination of groundwater and surface waters;
  • disruption to aquifer connectivity;
  • fugitive greenhouse gas emissions;
  • changes to land use and associated infrastructure development; and
  • clearing of native vegetation.

Environmental aspect identification and risk management for onshore gas exploration and development is assessed by the Department of Mines and Petroleum through an Environmental Management Plan, who may refer a project to the OEPA for environmental impact assessment if there is the potential for significant environmental harm.

ecologia Environment has a proven track record of developing approved EMP’s and EIA documents for clients, including onshore petroleum projects, and maintains excellent working relationships with regulators.  This allows us to deliver environmental excellence.
