Asset Development Projects
Asset Development Projects
The Asset Development Projects (ADP) of 2002 and 2003 with a $A1 billion investment in a new iron ore mine, the expansion of facilities at Port Hedland and the construction of a new railroad gave BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPBIO) an opportunity to raise the bar in the environmental management of resource construction projects - to set new standards that went beyond Government regulation and community expectation.
This was a radical concept. Typically, resource construction projects are driven by budgets and schedules - and meeting the minimum environmental standards required by the regulators.
To change the prevailing construction culture was never going to be easy. From the outset the team set out to establish new benchmarks for environmental management in resource construction projects. Stringent environmental contractual requirements and processes were developed, requiring a level of compliance never seen before in the resources sector construction industry.
As the ADP projects in-house environmental managers Ecologia’s role encompassed:
- Development and management of environmental approvals applications
- Development of environmental management plans
- Regulator and stakeholder engagement strategy and management
- Input to development of detailed design specifications for construction
- Development of contractual requirements
- Overall environmental coordination & management of construction phase of the project
- Development of induction, environmental training and awareness packages
- Development and implementation of an Environmental Management System certified to ISO14001 standards
- Audits & inspections
