New OEPA Bulletin Release!

The Office of Environmental Protection Authority has released Environmental Protection Bulletin No. 15 – Hydraulic fracturing of gas reserves. This latest bulletin has been developed in response to the rapidly growing interest in developing unconventional gas reserves in Western Australia, and seeks to provide environmental protection through managing processes such as hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.

New Mine Closure Guidelines bring a breath of fresh air for Mining Companies, Environment

The Department of Mines and Petroleum have just released new Guidelines for Preparing Mine Closure Plans. Garry Connell, Managing Director of ecologia Environment talks about what this means for industry. Key aspects of the Guidelines include; - Closure plans are now legislated for, and will form part of tenement conditions; - Closure criteria must consider other existing land uses, ongoing stakeholder consultation and pre-disturbance environmental values; - The DMP will assess and approve closure plans; and - Mining companies must provide details of financial provisioning for mine closure and rehabilitation as well as lodging environmental bonds.
