Southdown Magnetite Project

Southdown Magnetite Project

The Southdown Magnetite Project comprises a new magnetite mine 90 km northeast of Albany, a 120 km slurry pipeline and expansion of Albany port to export the ore. The project is jointly proposed by Grange Resources Ltd (mine and pipeline) and the Albany Port Authority (port expansion).

The key environmental issues include the visibility of the project, an informed and concerned local community, sulphides in the ore, the proximity of a rare flora population, rare vegetation communities and the impacts of extensive dredging in a popular and scenic harbour.

In 2004, Ecologia Environment was commissioned to facilitate the project’s Public Environmental Review process, develop the required documentation and conduct terrestrial biological surveys. As of December 2007 we are working with various stakeholders to respond to public submissions on the project.
